The launch of As You Are Photography achieves a goal our founder and owner, Erin Poppe, set for herself when she was 17 years old: to create space with her camera for people to feel seen and valued for their unique impact.

After Erin spent over 12 years developing her abilities and approach as an independent photographer, and serendipitously meeting Whitney Burke (our marketing director), this team was ready to take the next step!

But in what direction?

Why the jump from freelancer to business owner?

“I never completely bought into operating a name-branded portrait business, because I felt like it took focus away from the photo subjects and their stories. I want you to walk away remembering the intimate details of their faces and spaces, not that I took the image.

I also want to make sure I have a door to open for other creative professionals to own who they are and what they do. It’s important to me that people feel seen and special for who they are.” Erin Poppe

What other transformations are you taking on during this transition?

Our look was created in collaboration with Tyler Orbin, a freelance designer with shared Kansas City roots. He was invaluable in helping us create a brand that breathed our values of Develop Empathy (read up on these by clicking here) – from our black and white color scheme to the sans-serif fonts we use, every element was selected to feature the unique beauty and reality of each photo.
